FAQ’s

Why doesn’t my general dentist do my root canal?
Although over 75% of root canals in the USA are done by general dentists, many GPs limit how much “endo” they do in their office. The back teeth (molars) are considered the most challenging and are referred out the most often. Many GPs simply do not like to do any root canals and prefer to focus their practices on areas such as cosmetic dentistry.

Why do other offices want to do my treatment in two appointments?
Recent dental research shows that there are fewer post operative problems (pain, swelling , etc) with single visit treatment vs. multiple appointments. There are situations where multiple appointments are advisable to obtain the best result, but many of these cases can only be identified after treatment is started. Many practitioners were trained in the multiple appointment method in dental school and have not changed their technique. Either method is considered acceptable.

How much does a root canal cost?
Fees for root canals can vary widely depending on the tooth and the office. Molars (back teeth) are more difficult and time consuming to do than front teeth and therefore have a higher fee. If you know the tooth number that requires treatment then you can call different offices to see how the fees can vary.

How do you handle patient discomfort?
There are numerous ways to make your dental visit a pleasant one. For patients with anxiety, medications such as Valium and nitrous oxide (laughing gas) are prescribed when indicated. For most people basic amenities are all that is required for a positive, pleasant visit. Some of these include visco elastic foam cushions that custom mold to each individual’s body type, dark glasses to reduce light sensitivity, computerized anesthetic delivery, mouth prop to reduce muscle fatigue and to protect the jaw joint, and calming headphone music (or you can bring your favorite CD). Combine these advantages with many others such as “noiseless” dental handpieces, electronic apex locators and digital x-rays and your appointment time will fly by quickly and comfortably.
